Across the Border: Boy Reunited with Family after Four Years

A tribal raid in Ethiopia four years ago saw then-8-year-old Luke Chan* taken from his family and moved across the border into South Sudan. The child was forced to work in a cattle camp while longing for his family and loved ones.

The time away from his family was long and difficult, but the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Ethiopia and South Sudan, in close cooperation with the respective Red Cross societies, has successfully reunited Luke with his family.

South Sudan: Helping people find each other after fleeing Wau

Despite the violence in Juba, South Sudan, our teams are active in places like Wau, where we are helping people who have been separated by conflict find each other. At displacement sites near Wau, we are also providing food, access to drinking water, and bringing the wounded to medical facilities to be treated.

Since December 2013, we've helped nearly 60,000 people re-establish contact with loved ones from whom they were separated due to the conflict in South Sudan.

Thousands of people were forced to flee their homes at the end of June when fighting broke out in Wau, South Sudan. Many of those were South Sudan Red Cross volunteers, but that hasn't stopped them from working around the clock to help others in need.

The current death toll from the storm stands at 42, but the country's National Disaster Management Office warns that that number will likely rise as the island copes with the aftermath.
