New Zealand: In 2016 the Kaikoura Earthquake struck the South Island of New Zealand. The earthquake was found to have a magnitude of 7.8 and caused significant damage ranging from sediment-clogged rivers as well as destroyed houses, landslides, and destructed farms. This natural disaster not only caused great physical damage, but financial damage as well. Insurers are expected to have to pay an estimated $41.69 million to cover the damages.

Haiti: It is found that many people are having their Dominican citizenship taken away and being pushed across the border into Haiti by the Dominican Government. In 2013 the Dominican court stripped many of their identities due to a nationality law. In 2015 a new law was passed in order to help those affected secure their rights to citizenship but it is being unsuccessfully carried out. Pregnant women and children are being affected and living in very poor conditions. Sky Wheeler, a Women’s Rights Emergency Researcher, said “not only have many been deprived of their right to nationality, they are not getting the assistance they so desperately need.”

New Zealand: After earthquakes hit Marlborough and Kaikoura in New Zealand, the Red Cross is on the ground and providing psychological support to those affected. In Marlborough the Red Cross is providing support by going door to door and trying to ensure people’s emotional health. In Kaikoura the Red Cross is working to provide aid and essential equipment through the use of helicopters. Welfare centers are also being run by Disaster Welfare and Support Team Members.

It was found that over 40,000 people had to leave their homes and many buildings are now in ruins. The Italian Red Cross has been working to provide psychological support as well as food and medical care to those affected.

Olympics: The 2016 Olympics started in Rio on August 5, with over 200 country participants. For the first time in Olympic history, there is a refugee team competing under the Olympics’ official flag. Coming from Syria, South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ethiopia, these athletes are refugees fleeing from their home countries to escape violence, persecutions, and wars. The decision to have a refugee team to compete in the Olympics was praised as it would help raising awareness of the current refugee plight as well as giving hopes to the displaced populations.
